Bumble lashing back at Tinder: ‘We swipe left on you’

A recently filed lawsuit by the Match Group, the company that owns Tinder, Match.com and OKCupid, claims Bumble to be violating two of its patents. The rival now has answered to the allegations in an open letter which was published on their website, Bumble expresses that in no way the charges will hold up and says the lawsuit is an extension to Match’s ongoing attempts to acquire and denounces the lawsuit as baseless.

“We swipe left on you. We swipe left on your multiple attempts to buy us, copy us and, now, to intimidate us,” Bumble said in its letter. “We’ll never be yours. No matter the price tag, we’ll never compromise our values.” Since match’s buyout attempts have failed multiple times, reports of the lawsuit had immediately been connected to this fact. It was speculated that the lawsuit was an attempt to scare off potential buyers and to compel bumble to sell since the lawsuit would be dropped immediately. The lawsuit has not worked as planned concerning potential buyers. “Bumble is very excited about other potential opportunities that are still very much in discussion, and none of the recent news has affected these conversations.”, founder Whitney Wolfe said on the topic.

As Tinder has recently incorporated a Bumble like feature which allows women to control whether or not a conversation is initiated, which has been cited in bumbles open letter multiple times. “We’re more than a feature where women make the first move. Empowerment is in our DNA. You can’t copy that,” it said. “So, when you announced recently, in another attempt to intimidate us, that you were going to try to replicate our core women-first offering and plug it into Tinder, we applauded you for the attempt to make that subsidiary safer.”

Calling Match Group a bully, Bumble goes on to state they aren’t intimidated by the litigation. “We as a company will always swipe right for empowered moves and left on attempts to disempower us. We encourage every user to do the same. As one of our mottos goes, ‘bee kind or leave’”, writes bumble. “We wish you the best but consider yourselves blocked.”
